South on Highway 97 is always a great road trip, with lots of back road options to explore. I never tire of this trip! We were heading down to the Bend/Redmond, Oregon area, and found the ghost town of Shaniko an interesting stopover.
I’ve been stopping in Shaniko for many years, at a time when the Shaniko Hotel was open for lodging and meals. It is closed and currently for sale. The ice cream parlor around the corner was open, we were glad to have a waffle cone and sit a spell before meandering around a bit.
Shaniko hosts a number of festivals during the year. The Sixth Annual Shaniko Wool Gathering on June 30-July 1, 2012 will also include a sheep dog demo, quilters and crafters, fine arts, and pioneer skills. Shaniko Days is held on August 3-5, 2012 with entertainment, gun fights, music, an evening dance, and a BBQ pit dinner. October 12-14, 2012 brings the Shaniko Vintage Ragtime and Music Festival. A few things to put on the calendar! Check it out at http://www.shanikooregon.com/stallions.html.
On a clear day you can see all of the peaks of the Cascades, from Mt. Rainier to Mt. Bachelor, truly a sight! Get some help with the roadside mountain identifier a little south of town right off the highway.
What is your favorite small town road trip adventure? I’d love to hear about it!
